Who

My name is Kristin and here is my real food story:

By the age of 14 I was fed up with a life-long battle with stomach cramps and awful feelings so I stopped drinking milk and limited my dairy intake. Prior to this I had attempted to be a vegetarian and lasted one day. But once I cut out milk and my little sister gave up meat, and then my dad, and then my mom, I kind of felt obligated to do the same. And sort of by default I was vegan because of the aforementioned dairy issue. This comes after a Greenpeace childhood of save the whales, stop the circus, and hiking in Pennsylvania.

I made feeble attempts to get more veggie options in my school cafeteria, and I watched short videos about factory farming, but forgetting the horrors of eating meat was easy when I came home everyday to a house of hippies. College and traveling made things a little more difficult, but all preparation for a self-affirming mantra that is I eat what I eat because it is good for me, and equally as important, it is good for planet Earth and best for planet Earth's chickens, cows, pigs, fish...every creature.

When I met and fell in love with a man with Celiac disease I decided to give up gluten, but with the added bonus that it would help my mood and brain issues. Shortly thereafter I stopped eating soy because it was also having negative effects on my body.

Now I have a degree in French language, although I like to translate Latin for fun. I play the trumpet, the ukulele, the piano, and I can sort of sing. I like reading and walking, though not at the same time, and I fear being trapped in places. I love to ski but if I had to choose I prefer warm weather; I basically grew up on a beach. I prefer solitary sports like rollerblading or tennis, but I love badminton.
